Obituary of Derek Haney

Derek L. Haney 42, aka “Haney” passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Jamestown, NY. Derek was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 24, 1980, to Ester Haney. In his young years he was cared for by his maternal grandmother Marietta Haney. After her passing, he was reared by his Aunt Sarah Collins of Portsmouth, VA in which he knew and loved as “Momma”. They later relocated to Bolton, NC until her untimely passing. Derek graduated from East Columbus High school in Lake Waccamaw, NC in June of 1998. A few years later he relocated to Jamestown, NY with family members Gary and Valerie Piatt to get a new start on life. He enjoyed being with his family and friends and had a smile on his face every time you saw him. He would greet you with a big grin and always had a conversation. Derek had a big heart and would help anyone that he could. He is survived by his daughter Sahara Johnson of Fresno, CA; siblings Jimmy Webb of VA, Lathan Webb of NC; Teresa Stephens of VA; uncles Raymond Brooks of NC; Alfred and George Haney of NY, and Cleveland Haney of VA along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Derek is preceded in death by his mother Ester Haney, grandmother Marietta Haney, and his aunt Sarah Collins. A memorial service in his honor will be held in his original hometown of Bolton, NC at the Bolton Community Center located at 15354 Sam Potts Hwy, Bolton, NC 28423. The family will provide an update on the time and date of the service. Romans 8:18 “For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.”
