Obituary of Josephine Cantali

Josephine “Pina” Galati Cantali, 89, of 41 Delevan Ave, Jamestown, NY passed away May 14, 2022, after a courageous three-year battle with cancer. She was born on January 17, 1933, the daughter of Joseph Galati and Anna La’Russa Galati, in Scillato, Sicily where she grew up working on the family’s fruit orchard. On February 18, 1954, she ran off to Bronte, Sicily and married Alfio Cantali, her husband of 58 years, who preceded her death in 2012. In January 1957, Josephine and her young family immigrated to the United States with her destination, Jamestown, NY. To make ends meet, she worked as a dishwasher and kitchen help until she landed a job at Chautauqua Hardware. She was a dedicated employee for 30 years until her retirement in 1995. Josephine had a talent for gardening. She enjoyed spending her days in the yard and evenings relaxing on the front porch. Family was everything to her. The love for her children, grandkids and especially great grandkids was immeasurable. When not tending to her own family, Josephine could be found as a communicant at St. James Church. She loved working with her church family, she was on the Altar Rosary Society, worked at the St. Joseph table, thrift shop, soup kitchen, bingo, and the yearly festival. If there were cookies or bread to be made, she always had her apron on. Josephine is survived by two sons, Salvatore (Lydia) Cantali of Webster, NY, Sebastian (Gretchen) Cantali of Jamestown, NY; four grandchildren, Jessica Cantali Vasconcelos, Warwick, RI, Tyler (Meghan) Clegg, Jamestown, NY, Salvatore Cantali, Rochester, NY and Nicholas Cantali, Webster, NY; and four great grandchildren, Giuliana, Chad and Drew Vasconcelos, Warwick RI and Gabriella Newman, Jamestown, NY. She was predeceased by her parents Joseph Galati, Anna La’Russa Galati, her Husband Alfio Cantali, a son, Joseph Cantali, three brothers Joseph, Samuel and Peter Galati and one sister Carmella Dombroski. Calling hours will be held Wednesday May 18, 2022 from 4pm-7pm at Riccardi’s Hubert Funeral Home. A mass of Christian burial will be held Thursday May 19, 2022 10am at St. James RCC. Jamestown, NY.
